Obituary of Matthew Calabro

Please share a memory of Matthew to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Calabro Matthew, on April 11, 2012, age 82. Born in Germantown he lived most of his life in Roxborough. He was predeceased in death by his loving wife Dolores (nee Murray) and daughter Jane Marie. He is survived by his sister in law Sr. Elizabeth Murray, IHM, niece Ronni (Rocco) Wolf, cousin Carl Machini and other nieces and nephews. An Army Veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict, he retired from Budd Company's Hunting Park Division. Known as Matt, he was loyal and loved by all who know him. Matt volunteered his extensive carpentry, masonry and other remodeling skills and counsel to all his neighbors and friends, as well as his home made wine. His warmth, compassion and sense of humor will be missed. Matt, an avid "Low single digit golfer", played an integral part in the development, infrastructure and programs at Walnut Lane Golf Course. Because of his generosity and his love of the sport, Matt was instrumental in implementing the Philadelphia First Tee Program, a national 501c3, at Walnut Lane, soliciting and refurbishing hundred of old golf clubs into custom-sized clubs for inner city youths. Matt will mostly be remembered as an extraordinarily dedicated husband and father for his love, support and selfless hands on care of his wife and daughter during their respective lengthy battles with cancer. Family and friends are invited to attend his viewing and service Saturday from 8:30 - 10:30 AM at the Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 425 Lyceum Ave, Rox. followed by his interment Westminster Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, donations in Matt's name to either The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia, 1952 E. Allegheny Ave., Phila., Pa. 19134, or Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road St. 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256, would be appreciated.
